Devon Flag: A Proud Symbol of Devon’s Unique Identity (Cream First!)

The Devon Flag is a relatively new flag, having been adopted in 2003. However, the colours of the flag have been associated with Devon for centuries. Green represents the lush hills and valleys, black represents the moors, and white represents the coastline and China Clay industry.

This is a reference to the age-old debate over whether cream or jam should go first on a scone. Devonians are famously passionate about cream first, and the flag is a way to celebrate this.

The idea for a Devon Flag came from a group of Scouts who were attending the 20th World Scout Jamboree in 2002. They were unaware of a Devon Flag and wondered if any of the other Scouts knew of one. BBC Radio Devon took up the challenge and asked the public to submit designs for a Devon Flag.

Over 200 designs were submitted, and the winning design was created by student Ryan Sealey. Sealey’s design was chosen by the public in a vote, and the Devon Flag was officially launched in 2003.

History of the Devon Flag

The colours of the Devon Flag have been associated with the county for centuries. Green was used on the banners of the Devon Militia in the 16th century, and black and white were used on the banners of the Devon Yeomanry in the 18th century.

In 1816, Admiral Lord Exmouth flew a dark green flag with white circles at the Bombardment of Algiers. This flag is now on display at the Teign Valley Museum.

In the early 20th century, the Devon County Council used a flag with a green background, a black cross, and a white border. However, this flag was never widely used.

The current Devon Flag was adopted in 2003. It is a symbol of Devon’s unique identity and its rich history.
